Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Mark Williams Trio @ The Gala Theatre, Durham - Feb. 23

Mark Williams (guitar); Paul Susans (bass); Rob Walker (drums)

The Gala Theatre's 2024 lunchtime jazz concert series is going from strength to strength with another full house turning out to greet the Mark Williams Trio. Guitarist Williams is of the mercurial kind - inventive, masterful, in possession of his own identifiable sound. Joining the Irishman today were bandmates Paul Susans, bass guitar, and drummer Rob Walker. A new album is on the horizon and here in the Gala's studio space Williams took the opportunity to perform a selection of several new compositions.

Opening with No.3, it quickly became apparent we were in for an hour's worth of complex, dark, mesmeric music. Weird Country confirmed it! Invariably, Williams doesn't say much, his music speaks for itself.* Forever lurking in the shadows is Sco, that's John Scofield. This afternoon, on the day of the latest Moon landing, there was more than a hint our guitarist had been to the bleak, uninhabited Dark Side of the Moon

Returning to Earth, Williams, Susans and Walker hit a groove on 5-Way Switch, Susans' basslines a joy, Walker all over it. As we approached the finish, Williams apologised for not including a standard as intended, quite simply the trio had run out of time. Williams' albums Balaclava Street and Last Bus to Bensham remain firm favourites, this afternoon's preview of his forthcoming third album suggests it's going to be another essential purchase.

At two o'clock, as the audience departed, one Gala regular commented: I've never heard Mark talk as much as he did today! Russell
