Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Julian Gregory Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - Oct 10

(© Jeff Pritchard)

Julian Gregory (violin); Paul Hartley (guitar); Mathew Compton (accordion); Pete Wilmott (bass)

Have you ever had such a week as I’ve had recently? Without going into all the details it involved Covid jabs lots of bus travel, much walking and missing a Sunday night at the Railway that I was looking forward to which featured the great Dean Masser Quartet. I somehow managed to sleep from 2am on Sunday morning right through to 8-30am on Monday morning which meant I had a marathon sleep of over 30 hours!

Anyway, I thought I’d better attend the Tuesday gig even though gypsy jazz is an acquired taste and one that I have not yet acquired. I do however like Django Reinhart but I’ve never been too keen on Grappelli’s style of violin playing. As the last train home was at 23-03 from Stockport station I realised that I would miss the second set but I heard the whole of the first set which was a long one. My pal Jeff has emailed me the tune titles for set two so I have listed them.

All the musicians apart from Paul Hartley are associated with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra so they are very experienced musicians and the bass player Pete Wilmott I recall seeing in many line-ups, once in Liverpool with tenor man Bill Perkins and on another occasion in Cheadle Hulme with alto man Lanny Morgan.  Wilmott had an important role tonight as this was a drummer less unit and he did a first class job in keeping the tempos. I must say that for a Tuesday night the turnout was larger than usual and they seemed to be very generous with their applause so perhaps I am in the minority in not liking gypsy jazz too much although I did like the tunes.

Next jazz night at the Railway is on Sunday Oct 15 featuring Steve Waterman and the Mike Hall Quartet. Mike Farmer

Bossa Dorrodo; Lady be Good; Swing 39; Django’s Castle; Padam Padam; Pennies From Heaven; Summertime; Swing 43; Daphne; Undecided; Dark Eyes; Honeysuckle Rose.
