Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Rosemary Squires (December 7, 1928 - August 8, 2023)

Somewhat belatedly I've received the sad news that singer Rosemary Squires died in August aged 94. A lovely person and a great singer. Not always jazz but never far away.

I have fond memories of hearing Rosemary at the Pier Pavilion (now the Westovian Theatre) in South Shields one cold Sunday afternoon in December 2008. There weren't many there, pier pavilions in December aren't the most inviting places but those who left the warmth of their fireside weren't disappointed. The fact that it was also her 80th birthday made it extra special and I felt privileged to be sharing it with her along with Brian Dee (piano) and  Pete Stuart (bass).

Review HERE. The review had a  humourous reply from Rosemary's husband and manager Frank Lockyer.

As well as enjoying the concert I couldn't leave without a memento which came in the form of a Spotlite CD, Second Spin, which also had Brian Dee on as well as Vic Ash, Tommy Whittle and Martin Drew in the backing group. I'll be playing it again tonight. Very sadly missed - REST IN PEACE. Lance
