Steve, I thoroughly enjoyed the first 10 minutes of this but then had to leave off in order to write up a jazz cd review for Lance! It seems to me that rock music has a different function in society from jazz: rock is about memories and emotions and jazz concentrates more on musicianship for its own sake.
Ann Alex
Sorry Ann but that is codswallop! All music, including your own beloved folk music, involves memories and emotions. Likewise, apart from your beloved folk music, all music requires musicianship, not for its own sake, but to connect with their audience. Otherwise, all of those hours, days, years of practice would be of no avail.
Lance, I don't think you quite get my meaning and I maybe should have explained it better. Of course all music requires musicianship, including the rich musicianship involved in folk music. All I was saying is that with much jazz the musicianship is emphasised above all else. This doesn't apply to all jazz but certainly to some, for example Brubeck's 'Take Five' or Miles Davis 'Kind of Blue'. I listen to these pieces for musical interest and stimulation but not for emotional satisfaction.
All decent music connects with the audience in some way.
Ann Alex
Thanks Ann. Hope you are well and hope you get to listen to the rest some time..
For anybody wondering, the guest sax player on the Grateful Dead track is Branford Marsallis.
