Really saddened to hear about the demise of my old friend Dave. I've been trying to work out how long I've know him, and I think it must be about 50 years!
He was a natural musician and I doubt very much if he knew what a scale or a C7th was - he did it all by ear which is a very rare gift indeed.
I remember being in a car with him he was driving down to the south coast and, of course, he had music on all the time. He accurately sang or whistled every jazz solo that was being played, and as I said on a q&a with Lance during Covid, Dave should be made a Hero of North East Jazz! He provided a weekly venue where anyone from A-listers to fledglings could sit in. Dave also put me in touch with David Carnegie, John Pope and Paul Wight and I remember many great evenings at the Chillingham and the Globe.
Dave was a very good friend and will be sorely missed by myself and many others - the silence will be felt by all who knew him. RIP Dave. Alan Glen
