The last time Mike Hall played at the Railway was on June 18 and he was a replacement for Dean Masser who was unable to make it due to flooding issues. On this occasion he brought along another first rate rhythm section and they were given a great selection of tunes to play including the opener which I was unfamiliar with, Cole Porter’s Everything I Love.
It’s a mystery to me how Richard Wetherall gets such a great sound out of the house upright but he does and he also listens hard, inspiring his fellow musicians with a constant flow of ideas. Eryl Roberts and Ben Wilshire were a great team and really hit the groove for me especially on Chittlins Con Carne a tune from that fantastic Kenny Burrell album Midnight Blue. This was an ideal number to start the second set with and Mike managed to evoke the spirit of the much lamented tenorman Stanley Turrentine whilst sounding very up to date.
The final tune was an uptempo Johnny Griffin number Mildew which demonstrated Mike’s ability to get round the rhythm changes and to hold the audience’s attention right up to the last note. There is no jazz on Tuesday 18 at the Railway. The next jazz event is Sunday July 23 with the Ben Crosland Quartet.
