This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Art Farmer, Ernie Royal, Charlie Shavers, Emmet Berry, Harold Baker – Trumpets All Out


Many (and I mean many!) years ago, I bought this album and I loved it. However, I wanted to share the pleasure it gave me so I loaned it to a 'friend' who in turn loaned it to a friend who .... End of story, end of friendship.

So, trawling through that YouTube thing, I was delighted when I hit on the album.

I was equally delighted to remember just what a fantastic sound Charlie Shavers had. Harry James was working the same side of the street but Shavers had the edge when he hit the screamers.

I saw him, some years later with a Tommy Dorsey tribute band led by Sam Donahue and featuring Frank Sinatra Jr. at Newcastle's City Hall  and he (Shavers) still had it. I also wonder who now has the album that I so foolishly loaned out? Lance
