The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: John Jenkins with Kenny Burrell @ Blaydon Jazz Club (Dec.19)

Tomorrow (Monday), for one night only, Gateshead's Central Bar Quintet relocates upstream to the Black Bull pub in Blaydon. Earlier this year on Half Moon Lane the quintet performed the music John Jenkins. For a decade or so the alto saxophonist's star shone brightly until the appeal of obscurity took hold. Jenkins dropped off the jazz radar, his album John Jenkins with Kenny Burrell a lasting legacy.

At eight o'clock tomorrow Sue Ferris will take the role of Jenkins. Guitarist Giles Strong as Kenny Burrell is an enticing prospect, and the Central Bar's rhythm section - pianist Ben Lawrence, bassist Mick Shoulder, drummer John Bradford - will offer sterling support. 

A grand night is in store, it's the final Blaydon Jazz Club concert of the year. Monday's weather forecast suggests it'll be positively tropical. Telly off, coat on, see you there, it's a mere seven pounds at the door! Russell
