Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Bailey Rudd (drums): Interim Recital @ Music Studios, Newcastle University - Dec. 15

Early morning, a stage 3 recital in Newcastle University's subterranean Music Studios. The student musician in the spotlight, friend of the Black Swan jam session , Bailey Rudd. On Tuesday, Bailey acted in a supporting role to his friend Jacob Egglestone, this morning guitarist Jacob returned the favour.

Bailey's three examination pieces - Bright Size LifeThere Will Never be Another You and Footprints - were familiar to all present, that's examiners, tutors (John Hirst is Bailey's drum tutor), technicians and supporters. Bailey knew he could count on Jacob, similarly bassist Jamie Watkins. As a trio they did just fine, Jacob and Jamie more than up to the job, so much so, solos were shared between the three of them. On There Will Never be Another You Bailey and the boys were joined by student vocalist Katrina Miller. Great to see all four of the Black Swan crew 'gigging' at such an early hour!

To close his recital, Bailey went into overdrive on the Ezra Collective's take on Footprints, a tremendous piece of drumming! Next year be sure to check out Bailey and the guys at one of the Black Swan sessions.
