This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Emma Smith - Snowbound

Emma Smith (vocal); Alex Garnett (tenor sax); Ross Stanley (organ); Nick Costley-White (guitar); Ed Richardson (drums).

Just a day after I included Emma's Meshuga Baby in my (alphabetical) top ten vocal albums of 2022 up she pops with another one!

I'm not sure if this will be anything other than a digital download as it is only five tracks with a duration of circa 15 minutes. Nevertheless, the lady is, as always, in good voice with some original twists on some seasonal themes.

I've Got my Love to Keep me Warm has swinging tenor and guitar solos as well as an intricate tenor/voice unison scat chorus.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is possibly the must unlikely song to appear on a jazz record but any fears I had proved unfounded when Emma gave it a very hip, soulful, funky interpretation. Guitar dug in and helped Rudolph to deliver the Christmas presents. Rudolph may be called out again this yuletide ...

Snowbound  has Emma in Sarah Vaughan mode with Garnett blowing emotive tenor.

Blues For Santa is a good old time blues with plenty of double entendre lyrics: I'll be hanging my stockings on the bedpost ... Emma delivers in a manner worthy of the late Ms Kitt, maybe even earthier. Ross Stanley gives the B3 a blast.

What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? has long been my favourite festive song and Emma, if anything, enhances that view.

The album is launched in the form of "A Record Release Soirée" with two shows at Soho's Pizza Express on Dec. 10.
