There's no better sound than that of a precisionly executed sax section, rich harmonies and matched vibratos. No, there's nothing better than a sax section apart, that is, from a saxophone quartet.
The latter incorporates all of the attributes of the former but also adds a more contrapuntal approach that is beautifully demonstrated on this excellent album.
Four fine fleet fingered exponents shoot off in as many different directions, often with Shotton's beefy baritone to the fore even when pumping away in the basement. Griffith (I guess) does most of the jazz choruses. There's a sense of freedom in this setting that you don't always get hearing a horn playing over a conventional rhythm section.
Five of the ten tracks were arranged by Griffith and there are also contributions by, among others, John Warren, Paquita D'Rivera and Lennie Niehaus.
Very listenable and, if you play in a saxophone quartet and are looking for some new charts to freshen up your library then any of the Frank Griffith pieces on the CD can be purchased on www.fortonmusic.co.uk
