The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

4B @ The Exchange - August 10

Bernie Ranson (tenor/alto sax/vocals); Barbara Wilcox (keys); Harry Husaini (bass guitar); Jamie Mackay (guitar); Alan Wann (drums)

A hot night at The Exchange to listen to some cool jazz performed by 4B, formerly  known as Four. However, tonight as usual there were five musicians entertaining their supporters in North Shields. Harry Husaini and Alan Wann in ‘the engine room’ while the other three took their turns ‘out front’.

Some listeners sat in the bar while others listened from the cool of the courtyard, despite the scaffolding (soon to be dismantled) which made it look more West Side Story than downtown North Shields. It was therefore fitting that the evening was filled with predominantly American music from the 1940s onwards with a fair smattering of Charlie Parker, Wayne Shorter and Miles - of course.

There were some nice vocals from Bernie including There Will Never be Another You and You’d be so Nice to Come Home to. His tenor solo on I’m Old Fashioned and his change to alto on The Theme From Black Orpheus  we’re both well received.

Other highlights were Jamie’s guitar solos on You Don’t Know What Love is and Yardbird Suite while 'the engine room' strutted their stuff on Wayne Shorter’s Footprints.

Barbara Wilcox showed that, while she may be a relative newcomer to the local jazz scene, she can certainly hold her own. Each time I see her she impresses and so obviously enjoys playing this material.

Two hours of good music and a convivial atmosphere…what better way to spend a Wednesday evening?

4B are at The Exchange every Wednesday from 7pm and on Sundays from 3pm.

The set list included: Ladybird; Misty; I’m Old Fashioned; You Don’t Know What Love is; On Green Dolphin Street; There Will Never be Another You;  Black Orpheus; Yardbird Suite; Footprints; Just Squeeze Me;  Summertime; Corcovado. Sylvia T.
