This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Newcastle Jazz Festival (Day 2) Friday Aug. 19

This time next week the Newcastle Jazz Festival will be into its second day. Newcastle Arts Centre is kindly sponsoring the event in the Black Swan basement performance space. It's a contrasting double bill featuring a new duo and an established brass outfit. Tenor saxophonist Harry Keeble teams up with guitarist extraordinaire Mark Williams. Expect to hear their take on standards and perhaps one or two original compositions.

Trumpeter Graham Hardy (pictured with Jason Holcomb, trombone, Jamie Toms, tenor sax, and bass drum maestro Brendan Murphy) will lead his all-star Northern Monkey Brass Band in a joyous celebration of all things New Orleans, Star Wars (?!?!) and more. The NMBB boasts an A-list line-up. Friday week on Westgate Road is the only place to be! TICKETS HERE. Russell
