Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sunday Night Jazz @ the Globe: Emma Fisk's Hot Club du Nord - Jan. 30

Emma Fisk (violin); James Birkett, Dave Harris (guitars); Bruce Rollo (bass)

Because of Storm Malik - I had a somewhat violent conversation with some flying gates and lost* - I viewed tonight's eagerly awaited gig via livestream as, indeed,  we once all did, with great anticipation  and I wasn't disappointed.

I love all the various incantations of the Hot Club de France but what I love most about Hot Club du Nord is their use of two guitars instead of the traditional three plus, with James Birkett on a semi-acoustic jazz guitar, it offers a contrast to Dave Harris' Macca which is of course the norm for this style making the rhythm less clunky and, dare I say it? much more swinging.

The room, I gathered from my moles, was near capacity so the portents were good and, from the opening number, Ultra, I knew we were going to be in for a great session.

Nobody swings more on violin than Emma and James and Dave slot perfectly into the idiom. Bruce? He's a rhythm section in himself and when he sticks his head above the parapet you know just why he's there. This was a cracking session that I regret not being able to make although, had I made it, I think I may have been blushing at Emma's kind words re BSH! Much appreciated - thank you Emma - Lance

Ultra; Coquette; Swing 42; Besame Mucho; I Can't Give You Anything But Love; Stompin' at Decca; Sweet Chorus; Undecided; This Can't Be Love; Oriental Shuffle; Nuages; Belleville; Exactly Like You; A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square; Sweet Georgia Brown; J'attendrai.

*Pleased to say the gates have also recovered and are doing well.
