Sad to learn of the death, yesterday (Dec. 5) at the age of 72 of John Miles. The singer/songwriter/guitarist/pianist was born in Jarrow and brought up in Hebburn.
Before his hit record of Music and becoming MD for Tina Turner, John was a well known player around the local CIU clubs and often sat in at Jarrow Ex Servicemen's Club with the resident band who were quite jazz-orientated having Charlie Carmichael blowing tenor.
I remember seeing John at an open air gig in a South Shields' park where he wowed the crowd but I remember him mostly from a more personal memory - my dad was one of his early music teachers!
I recall dad telling me of this new pupil he had who could rattle off the scales faster than anyone else!
South Tyneside will be sad tonight - they've lost a well-loved son. Like Tina Turner, he was Simply The Best!
Rest In Peace
Lance
