Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Twelve reissues/previously unissued albums of 2021

Twelve outstanding reissues/previously unissued gems from the grandmasters of the magic art known as jazz. They're in alphabetical order - today's number one could be tomorrow's number twelve and no doubt we all have our own permutations. I realise that ten is the norm in these listings but I just couldn't think of who to leave out. Possibly Chick Corea (2018) or Roy Hargrove (2008) as maybe they are too recent but where does one draw the line?

Louis Armstrong: The Complete Columbia and RCA Victor Studio Sessions 1946 - 1966.

Chet Baker (book & CD): The Making of Chet Baker Sings.

Chris Barber: A Trailblazer’s Legacy.

Art Blakey: First Flight to Tokyo: The Lost 1961 Recordings.

Chick Corea: Akoustic Band.

Kurt Edelhagen & His Orchestra: The Unreleased WDR Jazz Recordings 1957 - 1974.

Tommy Flanagan: In His Own Sweet Time.

Roy Hargrove, Mulgrew Miller: In Harmony.

Sheila Jordan: Comes Love.

Roland Kirk: Live at Ronnie Scott's 1963.

Charles Mingus: Mingus At Carnegie Hall.

Wes Montgomery: The NDR Studio Recordings.

I left out  Coltrane's A Love Supreme: Live in Seattle and the Complete Lee Morgan Live at the Lighthouse as they were reviewed by other members of the team. There may also have been downloads that should have been included but, I'm afraid, with downloads it becomes a case of out of sight, out of mind. Lance
