Footage is out from the end of week concert from the 2021 National Youth Jazz Collective (NYJC) Summer Schools, with some NE representation amongst the country's aspiring next generation of players, many on their way to conservatoires. This well established stepping stone for young jazz musicians is held annually after (free) auditions (April 12 2022 at the Lit and Phil) for a week long Summer School as well as a short course. There is excellent support from a friendly roster of top jazz players and educators (including our own Paul Edis on the short course) as well as means tested bursaries: jazzers aged 14-18 should have a look at next year's arrangements (link).
Last year's course was held entirely online, so this year in person was a real treat for the staff and students. Unfortunately, Covid played a part again, with one "bubble", comprising three of the five combos, sent home on the last day, missing out on the grand finale concert in the magnificent hall of Repton School, Derbyshire, with their chance to showcase their work postponed to December in London.
The fruits of the two lucky remaining combos can be seen on Youtube (link and link) featuring locals Oscar Ho (booked for the Globe on Jan 9 with the Sam Toulson Quartet) on bass, and trumpet boy Ferg Kilsby (seen most recently with Jambone at Sage 2), while young Jambone keys maestro, Izaac Wilson attended the short course. BSH Ed in Chief will be relieved to see Ferg playing sans pedal board, and his combo will be featuring (quote) "poncy brushes and flugels", and even a good ole plunger mute! Chris K.
