Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Steve Pimlott Quartet @ The Railway, Stockport - August 1

Steve Pimlott (piano); Richard Weatherall (piano); Ed Harrison (double bass) Phil Bennett (drums).

Steve Pimlott brought along a different trio of musicians to the Railway last night than the one he used at his gig at the Tallyrand recently.  It was good to see Phil back in action after his short self-isolation due to being pinged and I’m pleased that Richard elected to play the house upright piano.  He always gets a great sound and I think an acoustic piano blends better with the tenor sax than the electric version.

Steve played tenor with a sound that reminded me of Hank Mobley during his Soul Station period. Richard Weatherall is well-known throughout the UK for being able to handle any playing situation and he did a first-rate job on Steve’s challenging repertoire.  Ed Harrison was impressive as usual on bass and Phil Bennett was outstanding on drums.

Steve will be next playing at the Creative Space, at the Slug and Lettuce, 651 Wilmslow Road, Didsbury M20 60Z on Tuesday  August 3. Also, on the same day, you can see guitarist Steve Oaks and his quartet featuring Ray Butcher trumpet. Mike Farmer
