Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Glen Cartledge Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - August 8

Glen Cartledge (guitar); Andy Hunter (tenor sax); Tom Hill (bass); Andrew Wood (drums).

Guitarist Glen Cartledge last played the Railway just before the pandemic caused live gigs to cease so I was wondering if he had lost any of his facility during the lockdown. I needn’t have worried as he sounded better than ever and the three musicians he brought with him did a superb job of backing him.

Hunter was impressive with a tenor sound similar to Tina Brooks on those Blue Note LPs that I wish I still owned. Tom Hill on bass, originally from California but now residing in the Birmingham area was well able to handle the sometimes tricky tempo changes that Glen likes to utilise.   Andrew Wood is from Nottingham, a graduate of the Leeds School of Music and he played at just the right volume level which is something that some drummers find hard to do. I am looking forward to hearing Glen’s Quartet again and may he keep doing what he’s doing.

Next gig at the Railway on August 10 is saxman Gair Carson with the Paul Hartley Trio 9:00pm-11:00pm. Mike Farmer
