Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Catching up with Ella - August 8

Ella Hohnen-Ford (vocals); Alex Ridout (trumpet); Joey Curreri (trumpet); Miles Mindlin (guitar); Will Sach (double bass)

The streamed gig has been a lifeline for many musicians. Now, as the live gig scene slowly but surely begins to recover, it isn't always possible to sit and watch an online performance in real time as the live gig experience will always have the edge. Catching up is always an option and one such musician well worth checking out is Ella Hohnen-Ford.

Sundays at 7:30 is Ella's screen time, be it Reddit or YouTube. Sunday gone - August 8 - Ella sang some great numbers in the company of friends: the two-trumpet pairing of 2016 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year Alex Ridout, and from LA, Joey Curreri, alongside Miles Mindlin, guitar, and the ever present London based New Yorker, bassist Will Sach.

From  I'm Beginning to See the Light through to There's a Small Hotel, an hour and more of choice standards with some exceptional instrumental solos flew by. Time and again Ridout and Curreri hit the heights, sitting in behind them, guitarist Miles Mindlin made it look all so easy, seemingly knowing every tune called by Ella. Bassist Will Sach, possessor of a great sound, held it all together. A week today, Will can be heard at the Lit & Phil in Newcastle (1:00pm) and later in the day at Saltburn Arts (7:30pm) working alongside guitarist Dave Archer in pianist Joe Webb's Art Tatum trio.

Ella Hohnen-Ford continues to receive plaudits from all quarters, all fully deserved. Ella is a star in the making.
