Friday signals the start of this year's Newcastle Jazz Festival. At two o'clock there is a free admission double bill presenting two duos. First up at Flat Caps Coffee in Carliol Square is the pairing of ex-pat American trumpeter Pete Tanton and Smoove and Turrell guitarist Lloyd Wright. Pete is active on the region's jazz scene leading the Riviera Quartet and as a key member of House of the Black Gardenia and the Strictly Smokin' Big Band. Duo partner Lloyd, of Legohead fame, is often on tour with the aforementioned S & T and other hugely successful performers.
Following Pete and Lloyd at three o'clock it's Ruth Lambert and Ian Paterson. Vocalist Ruth has long since been on the A-list as one of the finest interpreters of the GASbook and on this set she'll be accompanied by empathetic bassist Ian Paterson. As this opening session of NJF 2021 is a freebie, do treat yourself to an Americano, English Breakfast Tea, slice of cake or whatever - you'll be supporting the musicians and the venue.
Friday evening's concert is something of a set piece occasion. In the grand surroundings of Newcastle Civic Centre's Banqueting Suite there is a mouth-watering double bill in prospect. Beginning at half past seven, pianist Dean Stockdale will be playing a set of standards, and perhaps one or two original compositions, in the company of bassist Mick Shoulder and drummer Abbie Finn. The trio's set alone will be worth the price of admission, however, Michael Lamb's magnificent Strictly Smokin' Big Band has something rather special to present...Alice Grace singing Ella Fitzgerald!!! Alice and the SSBB have recorded an 'Ella' album (it'll soon be available to purchase) and this Civic Centre concert is a first opportunity to hear it. It promises to be a memorable occasion.
