Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Live (streaming) at Joe's - June 19

(Screenshot by Russell)
Joe Webb (piano); Dave Archer (guitar); Will Sach (drums)

Herbie's Tune from Oscar Peterson's session at Zardi's in Hollywood opened this afternoon's Live at Joe's set. Imagine Joe Webb as Oscar P, Dave Archer as Herb Ellis and Will Sach as Ray Brown. Once you've heard these London based guys it isn't such a stretch to see them cutting it on today's American jazz scene. Gershwin's I Was Doing All Right swung along, easy as, bassist Will grabbing a solo. It was shaping up to be another cracking set - thoughts of watching Euro 2020 on the box soon forgotten.

Freddie Green's Corner Pocket featured - who else? - rhythm guitarist par excellence, Dave Archer. Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby? proved to be a mid-point highlight, swinging like the clappers, the trio urging one another to ever-greater heights. To think that these guys will be 'up north' in August - can't wait!Moonlight in Vermont featured one of the most in demand bass players in London and beyond, Mr Will Sach. Our trio signed off with Stompin' at the Savoy. It had been another superb session Live at Joe's.

Joe, Dave and Will are set to appear in Newcastle and Saltburn on Friday 20 August playing their Art Tatum set. Details nearer the time.  Russell
