This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. KSTV: Joni Mitchell's Shadows and Light - June 12

A Kansas Smitty's session with a distinct folk element. Joni Mitchell the subject, Hattie Whitehead charged with the responsibility of doing justice to the Canadian's songbook, this Saturday evening would prove to be on the mellow side. The late seventies' release of Shadows and Light arose thanks to on the road recordings made during Mitchell's tour of her Mingus album featuring several jazz heavyweights including Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius. 

Hejira made for a good vocal approximation of Mitchell's sound by Whitehead. The session's first killer solo came courtesy of Alec Harper (Brecker) with excellent vocals on Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, albeit by way of a false (wrong key) start! Whitehead switched from six string acoustic guitar to Fender Telecaster to sing 'another heartbreaker' - Amelia - accompanied by Jas Kayser's sensitive brushes and João Caetano's equally sympathetic congas.

Free Man in Paris upped the tempo and the volume - short and sweet but rather good. Over to Jaco, aka Flo Moore. Our girl has got the great man's sound off to a tee. On tour, and subsequently on the album, Jaco played a solo feature. Here at Smitty's, Flo played it. As Whitehead said: Wow! Amazing! 

Whitehead sang Woodstock accompanied by her Telecaster and Flo's spot-on bass playing. To close the set Whitehead dedicated the performance to her dog - called Joni Mitchell! - as the Kansas Smitty's band went out on In France They Kiss on Main Street. Russell
