Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Rossano Sportiello: Live at the Flat #37 - June 20

Rossano Sportiello (piano); Paul Keller (double bass);  Ed Metz Jr. (drums)

A special edition, #37 in the series, of 'Live at the Flat'. Rossano Sportiello left his Greenwich Village home for a few days to play three or four trio dates in the Michigan area working with bassist Paul Keller and drummer Ed Metz Jr.. This Father's Day engagement found pianist Sportiello at the Zal Gaz Grotto in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Sportiello didn't forget to take his customary elegance with him and that stood him in good stead with his trio partners. Paul Keller is known as 'The House Bass Player for the State of Michigan' and, having heard the man on this set, he's fully deserving of the title! Drummer Ed Metz Jr.? Well, a stint working with Basie tells you all you need to know!

Three great musicians, they couldn't help but swing. From Rosetta through Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring into a blues, to If You Knew Susie, Frank Foster's Shiny Stockings to a set closing Shoe Shine Boy, this turned out to be one of the most enjoyable streamed gigs of this pandemic year. Catch up with it on YouTube.
