Bebop Spoken There

Faye McCalman: "For a while I would hear other artists and feel that I need to be like that person, have what they have; but then I realised that everyone has their own thing and what I connect with most is when I can tell an artist is just being themselves." - (Jazzwise July 2021)

Adrian Cox's Sunday Service: Artie Shaw - May 9

(Screenshot by Russell)
Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals)

Another Sunday Service, mugging up on his subject during the week then going for it at one o'clock is Adrian Cox's modus operandi. This afternoon, a sixty minutes' survey of the career of popular bandleader and virtuoso clarinetist, Artie Shaw. As usual, our host's online audience made its presence known by way of non-stop comments. Do they have time to actually listen?

Shaw's Gramercy Five small group recordings featured during the set (including the 1940 release Special Delivery Stomp on the Victor label), Cox demonstrating his proficiency on the instrument, doing himself and Shaw proud. Instrumentals and vocals, our man makes it look so easy, not least committing lyrics to memory. Is it any wonder Cox is such a popular draw at jazz clubs up and down the land?

Next week's Sunday Service (May 161:00pm) promises to be a bit special...Cox, Joe Webb (piano) and Will Sach (bass)!
