This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. JRR...the local connection

Today's edition of Jazz Record Requests on Radio 3 (Mar. 7) included several tracks with links, however tangential, to Tyneside. A request for Humphrey Lyttleton's band playing Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You from 1957 featured South Shields born Kathy Stobart (pictured) on tenor sax. The requester, none other than Stobart's fellow Sand Dancer, trumpeter Colin Dawson, long since resident in Germany, wanted to hear something featuring the fondly remembered musician.  

Tyneside's Faye MacCalman (Archipelago) requested Vi Redd with the Basie band shouting the blues and playing alto sax on Stormy Monday Blues from a 1968 recording of an in concert performance in Juan Les Pins. And today's final track featuring Camilla George playing  Isang was requested by visual artist and friend of Jazz North East and Sage Gateshead, Gina Southgate. As and when Sage Gateshead reopens take a look in the shop on the concourse where you'll find some of Gina's paintings.
