This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Live at Joe's: Nat Cole - Mar. 20

Tiny Grimes' Tiny's Exercise ushered in this afternoon's Live at Joe's session. In recent weeks Joe Webb has taken to shining a spotlight on a jazz great from yesteryear, last weekend his subject was Jaki Byard, this week, Nat Cole. One of Joe's many online followers commented/confessed that he knew Nat 'King' Cole the singer but had no idea Nat Cole played the piano! Ten numbers in one hour, Joe's piano in need of some TLC, nevertheless, so good is Joe he coaxed a tune out of the upright, then another, and another.

Oscar Moore, Cole's 'other' noted guitarist, contributed Many Moons Ago to today's set, a reminder that Cole led some terrific trios. Cole's trademark upbeat lilt, a trait he shared with Erroll Garner, permeated today's live stream. A familiar Sweet Lorraine, a not so familiar Call the Police, Joe handled the material with aplomb whilst chatting amiably to his online audience. To close, I've Found a New Baby.  

Joe Webb is a regular performer at Kansas Smitty's. Next week he'll be there on a couple of occasions, be sure to log on at eight o'clock (Tuesday-Saturday).
