Bebop Spoken There

Gary Bartz: ''Music is nature's gift to man. It's the only religion. We're living in a terrible era, but what a beautiful thing music is. Look how it brings us together like religion is supposed to; and with no language barriers.'' (Jazzwise September, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Tonight @ the Globe. Four In One is now Three In One (and counting!)

(Press release)

Last minute change of line up: on Saturday two members of the band learned they must self-isolate but with typical determination they insisted that ‘the show must go on’. The line up tonight is Will Howard – tenor sax, Elliot Roffe – double bass and Steve Hanley – drums.

Four In One is a Leeds-based group that features some of the UK’s finest Jazz musicians. The band play a mixture of repertoire that draws from the American tradition, paying homage to composers such as Monk and Tristano as well as incorporating original compositions. The group grew out of a weekly jam session at Jamil’s house – four kindred spirits who all share a passion for this music.

Will Howard – tenor saxophone. In the last 10 years he has made a name for himself in the UK as one of the most versatile young improvisers around. “Howard’s timing, sound, everything about him marks him out as a generous talent. Abundant technique, yet subservient to the sound he was pursuing. Howard must be heard” – Bebop Spoken Here.

Steve Hanley – drums. Steve brings a real sense of creativity to his kit playing – an intense player, steeped in the tradition of the American greats such as Paul Motion and Al Foster. You may have come across Steve in the Family Band who recently represented the UK at the 2019 prestigious 12 points Festival in the Bimhuis, Amsterdam.

Jamil Sheriff – piano. Described by The Guardian as “someone who has made a real difference to the vitality of the jazz scene in the North of England”, Jamil Sheriff is the Programme Leader for Jazz at Leeds Conservatoire’. Jamil has been described by The Times as an “excellent Northern pianist who brings together a range of contemporary and urban approaches”.

Sam Quintana – double bass. Sam is one of the musicians who will constantly surprise. Always growing as an artist, Sam is really starting to make a mark on the scene – in demand as both a sideman and also leading his own group ‘Wandering Monster’ – an outlet for his compositions.
