As Sage Gateshead looks to the future Norman Foster announces his retirement

Sage Gateshead opened in December 2004 since when the Tyneside venue has firmly established its reputation as a world class performance venue. Long in the planning, Northern Sinfonia and Folkworks joined forces to help turn a dream into a reality. Unstinting support from Gateshead Borough Council guaranteed the first spade in the ground on the south bank of the Tyne and over many months Tynesiders watched as the iconic building began to take shape. This week, at the age of 85, the project's architect, Norman Foster, announced his retirement. 

Sage Gateshead's first festival of any kind just happened to be the Gateshead International Jazz Festival in spring 2005. Following the fourteenth annual festival in 2018, Sage Gateshead decided to take time out. The event was paused, missing out 2019 altogether, determined to return reinvigorated this year. And then, the world stopped turning. The pandemic put an end to a remodelled 'Gateshead Jazz' scheduled for March. Fingers crossed that in 2021 things will be back to the 'old normal'!
