Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sunday Service: Adrian Cox & Joe Webb live streaming from Toulouse Lautrec, London - Sept. 20

Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals); Joe Webb (piano)
Adrian Cox has been live streaming weekly for much of the lockdown period and today stated his intention to continue indefinitely with his self-styled, online 'Sunday Service' sessions. The majority of the clarinetist's streams have been from his London home, exceptions being a session from Gun Hill Studios in Sussex (Dave Newton was on piano) and a virtual NYC set under the auspices of Lincoln Center's Dizzy's Club. Today Cox, in the company of pianist Joe Webb, came direct from Toulouse Lautrec Jazz Club, Kennington, London.

Can't We Be Friends? opened today's Sunday Service, Big Butter and Egg Man (Cox's vocals) followed, yes, this early afternoon performance had 'masterclass' written all over it. Seven Come Eleven (stupendous piano playing) maintained the highest of standards. At Webb's request our duo played Hoagy's Rockin' Chair which Cox said he'd never previously played, nor sang - one would never have guessed! Another new one for Cox was Kay Swift's More Than You Know, suggested to him in the week by Webb.

Picking up the tempo the boys tore into Swing That Music: Cox's hot clarinet (and vocals) with spell-binding piano playing from his mate Joe. The hour was up, Cox promised to return next week (1:00pm), and with that the duo went out on Si Tu Savais, Ma Mère
