You
may (or may not) know that I'm a Charlie Parker "completist" so I was
pleasantly surprised to hear of a 'previously unknown' session involving
Charlie. So just to let you know out of interest - these are the details: The
source is 'The Louis Armstrong Tapes' - apparently Louis had a large collection
of cassette tapes which he had carefully listed and collated.
The session is a Jam Session recorded
at pianist Buddy Johnson's Basement with Big Nick Nicholas and Charlie with
assorted unknown musicians. Two tracks feature Bird - Three Little
Words and Lady Bird - date unknown but
1950/51 suggested.
The fidelity isn't great but better
than Bird at St Nicks! The group
comprises: Bird, Big Nick, unknown trombone, trumpet,
2nd tenor, piano, bass and drums. I'm sure the pianist is Walter Bishop
Jnr, I hazard a guess that the trumpeter is Benny Harris (defo not Diz, Miles,
Fats, Kenny or Red).
This material has not been released
in any form - and probably won't be. Charlie plays OK delivering all his usual
phrases and clichés - but definitely not inspired, although, all Bird music is at least
worth hearing.
