Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Joy Ellis: Lockdown live - May 1

Joy Ellis (piano/vocals).

What an absolute delight this was! Well, I shouldn't sound surprised as I've heard Joy with her quartet live at The Globe and reviewed albums by her so the form book proved a good guide.

Great vocal sound and some lovely piano playing with only one minor quibble - the singing was clear but the chat in between wasn't very distinct so I don't know who next week's special guest will be or if indeed Joy actually announced it or it is to be a surprise.

Apart from that, to quote from an old Sinatra song - This is a Lovely Way to Spend an Evening - come to think of it consider that a request!
Lance.

Ain't Misbehavin'; Night and Day; All the Things You Are (piano solo); They Can't Take That Away From Me; Over the Rainbow; Lady Madonna.

Dear Lance,

Thanks so much for tuning in to the Facebook live stream and for your lovely supportive comments!

I don't know that Sinatra song but your request is a great reason to check it out :)

Best wishes,

Joy

Was Joy's lockdown set part of Morley College, London's new weekly Friday lunchtime (1:00pm) gigs? The schedule for the next few weeks is as follows: Ivo Neame (May 8); Adam Dyer (May 15); Tim Richards (May 22): Tim Boniface (May 29).
