Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Zoë Gilby & Mark Williams @ Jazz Café Mezzanine Set 2 - Feb. 19

(Review/photos by Pam Young)

The second set started with another dip into the Aurora Project with Little Dancer by Tom Harrell, followed by an absolutely gorgeous rendition of Monk’s ‘Round Midnight. Zoë's voice and Mark's guitar had me spellbound.

What do you do after that? Well why not You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone by Bob Dylan from the Blood on the Tracks album – fantastic!

We were treated to a lovely ballad Autumn Serenade by Michelle Nicolle then a fun version of You Turned the Tables on me and a marvellous version of I'm Always Drunk in San Francisco - a Nancy Wilson song.  Ah memories!

A lovely original composition - Find a Secret - gave us a  fine example of Zoë's song writing talent, and to follow that, the glorious In Walked Bud. Monk's immortal composition ending a great afternoon. The joint surely was jumpin!

It's not difficult to see why Zoë Gilby was awarded Jazz Vocalist of the Year in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2019, her vocal range is amazing just pitch perfect, the choice of material was varied with fresh interpretations of both jazz standards and "contemporary" singer/songriters’ music.

Wonderful songs, beautiful performance by Zoë and the equally awesome Mark Williams.
