Classic Swing, I'm told, has made a good start at their new Tuesday lunchtime venue -
The Ship in Monkseaton - drawing a decent sized crowd for their first gig. Likewise, their Monday afternoon session at the
Marquis of Granby, Sunniside*, is also building up. Tonight (Wednesday, Nov. 1), they play at the
Elephant, home of Ashington Jazz Club, where South African reedman/vocalist
Roy Burrows is the featured guest artist.
Burrows, a sidekick of Classic Swing's ace trumpet player Bob Wade back when Wade was also part of the South African jazz scene, is spending some time in the northeast and is expected to pop up again at the Classic Swing lunchtime gigs mentioned above.
Tommy Graham is now on drums with the band making the finalised lineup: Bob Wade (trumpet/flugel/clarinet); Jim McBriarty (sax/clarinet/vocal); Colin Haikney (keys)**; Alan Rudd (bass); Tommy Graham (drums)***; Olive Rudd (vocals).
Lance.
*As a further incentive to visit the Marquis, on Mondays they have a BOGOF (Buy one get one free) meal deal.
** Malcolm Armstrong on keys @ Marquis.
*** Ian Hetherington on drums @ Elephant.
