Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

A Taste of Teesside

(Report by Ron Hampton)
The changing Jazz scene on Teesside has resulted in some interesting developments this year. Tees Hot Club, along with guests, have been playing at Dormans Club every Thursday for more than 7 years so it was decided that, in order to add more variation to this Jazz event, to include a monthly Guest Band night.

This has proved to be highly successful and has included the following bands. Middlesbrough Jazz and Blues Orchestra led by Kevin Eland, Ray Dales with the James Harrison Trio, Jeremy McMurray with the Pocket Orchestra, Body and Soul led by Richie Emmerson, Lickerty Split {pictured) led by Eddie Bellis, The Darlington Big Band led by Richie Emmerson and the Customs House Big Band with Ruth Lambert led by Peter Morgan.  The next Guest Band night will be the Christmas Party Night with the Middlesbrough Jazz and Blues Orchestra led by Kevin Eland on the 7th December. These nights are all free entry as are the weekly Tees Hot Club nights.

A new Jazz night was started earlier this year at Saltburn Golf Club playing on the first Sunday of the month.  The band, known as "The Jazz Lads" are Ray Dales alto sax, Adrian Beadnell bass, Ian Bosworth guitar, Kevin Eland trumpet, Jeremy McMurray piano and Mark Hawkins drums. This again has been well attended with the next one on the 3rd December. It is planned to continue with this event next year.

A now established monthly Jazz and Tapas night at the Arc Stockton is proving to be highly successful with Jeremy McMurray and the Pocket Orchestra. Jeremy McMurray piano, Peter Ayton bass, Mark Toomey alto sax, Paul Smith drums and Paul Donnelly guitar. The next one is on Thursday 7th December.
