Bebop Spoken There

Stan Woodward: ''We're part of the British jazz scene, but we don't play London jazz. We play Newcastle jazz. The Knats album represents many things, but most importantly that Newcastle isn't overlooked". (DownBeat, April 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Radio Triptych (Updated)

(Preview by Russell)
At this year’s Gateshead International Jazz Festival Paul Edis, Paul Susans and Rob Walker took to the Jazz Line-Up stage on the concourse at Sage Gateshead. The trio – Triptych – played to a large audience of festival goers and the occasion was recorded for future broadcast. It’s taken six months, but the wait is over. Tomorrow, Saturday 30th, Triptych’s set can be heard on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Line-Up programme at 5:00pm. Triptych's set actually starts approximately 41 mins in featuring part of Dr Gonzo's and Fragment Reprise/Dark Ages/Fragment Finale. Prior to this, there are pieces from Miles Mosley's festival gig as well as a track from the Gareth Lochrane Big Band's recent CD - Fistfight at the Barn Dance - and one from Nat Steele's tribute to the MJQ.
Geoffrey Smith’s Jazz at midnight on Radio 3 looks at the career of Buddy Rich from his days with Tommy Dorsey through to his own fabled powerhouse big band. Monday evening over on Radio 2 at ten o’clock it’s Gregory Porter on Nat King Cole and at eleven on Radio 3 Jazz Now presents an 80th birthday concert featuring Mike Gibbs with an all star big band. Presenter Soweto Kinch talks to Gibbs prior to last week’s Scarborough Jazz Festival performance.

The Jazz Baroness has been broadcast on more than one occasion on BBC Radio and on Monday it will be broadcast three times in one day! BBC Radio 4 Extra runs the documentary about Monk’s muse, Pannonica at 6:30am, 1:30pm and again at 8:30pm. Friday 6th October at eight o’clock over on Radio 2 it’s Friday Night is Music Night. A ‘jazz special’ with Madeline Bell and Anthony Strong, and Big Band Bonanza, led by Joe Stilgoe, features arrangements by some of the greats including Nelson Riddle, Buddy Rich and Gordon Goodwin plus a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. The concert was recorded in March at the Forum Theatre in Billingham, Stockton on Tees.
