CD Review: Paul Skerritt Band

Paul Skerritt (vocals); James Harrison (piano/keys); Anthony Ord (bass); Thomas Chapman (drums) + (on various tracks) Danny Allan, Will Howard, Josh Bentham (sax); Michael Lamb (trumpet); David Gray (trombone)
(Review by Lance).
Paul Skerritt is a 100% vocalist. If a song's worth singing he sings it without cheating. Of course, those who've heard/seen him at gigs or jams know this already. He's Sinatra, Bennett and Bublé it's true, but he's also his own man and very much able to put his stamp on some more newer material. On this compactly packed album, he does just that with Taylor Swift's Shake it Off . It's a hoot, with Harrison playing stride/ragtime piano as if he'd been born in Harlem!
Don't Get Around Much Any More adds Will Howard to the basic trio and, take it from me, if this group was playing you wouldn't have missed the Saturday dance!
Cheek to Cheek: Paul with the trio. A rhapsodic introduction by Harrison before Young Blue Eyes gives it the Ol' Blue Eyes treatment. Magic!
Will Howard returns for Misty. Howard is from Leeds which is akin to saying he's from Manhattan in UK terms.
Get Lucky brings in Danny Allan. If Taylor Swift was a surprise then Daft Punk is an even bigger one! And yet it works amazingly well!
Sway: Three man horn section with a fiery solo from Lamb.
Bare Necessities is sans horns but the trio provide the kick with Skerritt in good voice and Harrison solos in typical style which translates as fantastic!
Putting on the Ritz has some effective clarinet doodling which, I guess, is Howard. It's a stellar vocal too!
Let the Good Times Roll is the final track (dig Danny Allan!) which is where the CD falls down. After a number like this, you stand up in your bedroom, or wherever you're listening, and yell 'More! More!' but the player clicks off whereas, at a gig, you shout, 'More!, More!, and you get more!
However, with a CD you don't get a hastily busked All of Me but the whole shebang is reprised! The best of both worlds.
Anth Ord and Tom Chapman keep the ship afloat and combine with Harrison and the guest soloists to give Skerritt the support he deserves.
Available at gigs or direct from info@paulskerrittmusic.co.uk. £10 - £1 delivery.

Sounds like a 'must have'CD. Will Howard emerged through the Durham Music Service set-up (Durham County Youth Big Band etc). Will does play clarinet, so, good guess, it's probably him.
