The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Vieux Carré Jazzmen @ Northumberland Park, Tynemouth - May 28

Brian Bennett (banjo & vocals); Bob Wade (trumpet); Jim McBriarty (reeds & vocals); Laurence McBriarty (trombone); Bill College (bass); Fred Thompson (drums & vocals); Steve Wade (drums) (in the second set).
(Review by John T.)
The Vieux Carré Jazzmen were the last of four bands to play on the bandstand in Northumberland Park in Tynemouth last Sunday (May 28). See attached photo of a bands eye view of the gig. The usual numbers were forthcoming. Ice Cream and Hello Dolly seemed very appropriate for the outdoor setting. Nice to see the full band and not just a four piece as they sometimes bring along for outside gigs.
One or two putters from Cullercoats were in evidence but it was mostly a family audience. Bob Wade’s wife (who hails from Tynemouth) was surrounded by her family members. Bob’s son Steve and his family travelled all the way from Bedale (with his own cymbals) to ably guest on drums during the second half. This gave Fred an opportunity to sing up front. Steve retuned to live in the UK from SA several years ago. Today was a great get together for the Wade family.

Found out that Steve Wade is left handed and did not in fact bring his own cymbals. He changed Fred's cymbals round to his settings.
Also the catering for the event was fantastic with a huge Hog Roast! White baps with pulled pork, stuffing and apple sauce.
