Why does it always seem to rain at funerals? I know it doesn't really but it did today and if ever a person deserved the sun to shine on her departure it was Margaret Barnes. However, the sun did not shine on the righteous on this occasion but the mourners who filled the church at Whickham, the Crem at Gateshead and the Gibside Hotel were oblivious to the weather.
The jazz community made its presence felt in bidding a fond farewell to a pillar of the north east jazz scene for many years.
Mood Indigo set the scene and Every Time we Say Goodbye sustained it. Surprisingly, 'twixt these two, an Ed Sheeran number didn't disturb the ambience and although, we were cold, wet and bedraggled, inwardly we were aglow at having been able to share our mutual friendship and say our goodbyes to a remarkable woman.
