Bebop Spoken There

Jools Holland (on his 2026 spring/summer tour): ''With the mighty [R&B] Orchestra, our wonderful boogie woogie singers, and the brilliant Joe Webb opening the shows [including Darlington Hippodrome, June 19], we're in for some very special evenings of music.'' The Northern Echo February 5, 2026

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Chad Lefkowitz-Brown - Onward

Chad Lefkowitz-Brown (tenor); Steven Feifke (piano); Raviv Markovitz (bass); Jimmy McBride (drums) + Randy Brecker (trumpet on 2 tracks).
(Review by Lance).
A barnstorming original opening/title track Onward, by the 27 year old tenor saxist sets the stall out and is guaranteed to draw the only response possible -"Whew!"
Stevie Wonder's Isn't She Lovely? is taken so forcefully it could have been retitled Isn't She bloody (or words to that effect) Gorgeous? had not pianist Feifke toned the assault down.
Franklin Street brings Randy Brecker aboard for a mid tempo romp through CL-B's home town. Comparisions could also be made of the leader with Brecker's late brother Michael.
Giant Steps, described as 'a trial by fire for any tenorman', sees our man come through intact and unburned. Once again Feifke's piano helps the dust to settle. Note McBride's drums here!
It's not all blood and thunder though, Hoagy's The Nearness of You is given the sensitive ballad treatment the tune deserves and bares comparision with any version by, maybe, better known names.
Deviation is another kick the door down and ask questions later blast - surely a lifetime away from doing gigs with Taylor Swift - well someone has to do them!
He says: A mom and pop coffee shop still has to take cues from Starbucks. I think that applies to jazz musicians as well. There's only so much that I can take from the pop world into the jazz world, but it's been exciting for me to see through social media that there are a lot of young kids out there who are passionate about jazz and want to hear people playing and improvising at a really high level.
Blues For Randy brings Brecker back and the two horns sound good on the head. Excellent piano, the horns sparkle and the rhythm section kick.
Impetuous has a Horace Silver feel to it with McBride going for gold,
All of You, when in doubt Cole Porter's your man and Chad takes the great man's tune to the cleaners, turns it inside out, upside down, all without losing sight of the finish line which sees sanity return.
A great album and one for which I apologise for my procrastination - it was released May 12 - but well worth the wait.
Details.
Lance.
