This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Talking jazz at Ushaw Durham Jazz Festival

Next week’s Ushaw Durham Jazz Festival (26-28 August) features a host of top class musicians including Alan Barnes, Bruce Adams and Nigel Price. Some of the north’s own superstars, and, rising stars, will proudly represent the region – Zoë Gilby for one, the fabulous Durham Alumni Big Band and the dedicated archeologists and archivists collectively known as the New Century Ragtime Orchestra.
Visual artist Dave Barden will be on hand to document whatever takes his fancy, so do take time to view some of his work which will be on show during the festival, and you must make a point of hearing Alyn Shipton – broadcaster, producer, writer, musician –   in conversation with musician and raconteur Alan Barnes. They will be pondering that most intractable question…What is jazz? at four o’clock on Saturday August 27.
