Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Musicians Unlimited @ Jackson's Wharf, Hartlepool. August 11.

John Nesbitt, one of our many Teesside operatives, sent us this YouTube clip of Musicians Unlimited playing a charity gig at Jackson's Wharf, Hartlepool.
John tells it thus...
Musicians Unlimited didn't fall off the back of a wagon last Thursday (August 11) night at Maestro Mick Donnelly's, fundraiser but their fantastic music just poured out. Delightful to the ear. The event was to raise funds for the RNLI & Support your bowel charities. The massive audience had had a good soaking from the rain, that wasn't forecast, but almost all stayed the distance of about six hours and all went home humming and singing. Tough Hartlepool stock.
The sound system was kindly supplied and installed by Tony and Nolene White. Contact; tonywhiteintheuk@live.co.uk

The trailer in which the band was housed was kindly donated for the occasion by Ian Sykes by Ian Sykes of View Logistics. URL; www.viewlogistics.co.uk.

Jacksons Wharf is at The Highlight, Hartlepool, Cleveland, TS24 0XN 01429 862963 jacksonswharf.hartlepool@marstons.co.uk They serve great food and a good selection of well-kept Wines, Beers, Ciders & Lagers at affordable prices. Right next to The Trincomalee, iron clad sailing battleship. Well worth a visit.
Musicians Unlimited, whose home base is the Park Inn, 82 Park Rd., Hartlepool,TS26 9HU. normally play Sunday lunchtimes there although, at present theory are taking a Summer break. However, all is not lost for this Sunday (August 21) there is a special event. Let Mick Donnelly tell it...

MDA Music Scholarship Fund proudly presents an afternoon of 'JAZZ MUSIC' at The Park Inn, Hartlepool. (12noon - 3pm.)
This event is to help raise funds towards providing scholarships for young musicians in the Hartlepool area.
It will feature some of the North East finest musicians, Mick Donnelly, James Harrison, Ton Chapman, Mick Shoulder and many guests.
It is a FREE concert, however, donations are very welcome.
