Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

More Quotes

Simon Spillett dug up a few more quotes for us:
"Listening to Benny [Goodman] talking about the clarinet was like listening to a surgeon get hung up on a scalpel."
Artie Shaw, quoted in the sleeve notes to Benny Goodman: The Complete Capitol Trios
"What I do is very superficial and very obvious. What I do takes about five minutes to figure out. How much more useful would it be to spend time analysing a Charlie Parker solo?"
David Sanborn, Jazz FM magazine 1991
"This is all purely personal, you understand, but the saxophonist is, to me, just this side of unbearable."
Andre Previn listening to John Coltrane's 'Dahomey Dance', Blindfold Test, DownBeat magazine 1963
"It wasn't unusual to even hear some of the younger players sniggering at his attempts to play free music."
Brian Blain, obituary of Tubby Hayes, Cream magazine 1973
"A jazz musician is supposed to make a tune sound not like itself, but like himself, and this is what Davis did."
Benny Green, sleeve notes to UK issue of Kind of Blue, 1960
"Which is the way to the toilet?"
Thelonious Monk's response to Oscar Peterson's  'Easy Listenin' Blues', Blindfold Test, DownBeat magazine 1966.
Simon.
