to help with a query regarding Dexter Gordon's appearance at the University
Theatre, Newcastle.

Well Sid, I too was at that concert along with friends and fellow musicians Charlie Carmichael and Marshall Walker - both now playing in Dexter's band up there. It was an unusual gig inasmuch as Dex seemed to be pretty spaced out (mind you, so were we!) What I remember most is that, after each number, he would hold the tenor in front of him horizontally. I recall the concert started late although I don't remember the behind closed doors bit. He played brilliantly despite, or because of, whatever he was on! I can't recall the other members of the band. Dexter and Wardell Gray are two of my all-time favourite tenor players and, hopefully, someone else may be able to fill in the personnel details.
A Jazz Journal review from April 1978 of a gig at Ronnie's gives the line-up as Cables on piano, Rufus Reed, double bass and Eddie Gladden on drums. Probably the same tour.

I seem to think this gig was part of the yearly jazz festival organised by Andy Hudson. Yes Dexter and I were very pi__ed. It took an hour or two to get him on stage.The only "modern" gig I can remember about the time was Dave Brubeck at the City Hall. We sat behind the drummer Joe Morrelo on the stage
