CD Review: André Fernandes - Dream Keeper

André Fernandes (gtr); Perico Sambeat (alt/sop/fl); Alexi Tuomarila (pno); Demian Cabaud (bs); Iago Fernandez (dms) + Marcelo Araújo (perc 2 tks); Paulo Gaspar (bs clt 5 tks); Desidéro Lázaro (ten 2 tks); Gonçalo Marques (tpt/flug 2 tks).
(Review by Lance).
A first! a Portuguese jazz album (not counting those bossa albums from Brazil) that is very much a statement of intent from an outstanding guitarist. This is music for today, free? - occasionally. Fusion? - occasionally, Experimental - occasionally. Lyrical? - frequently. Jazz - indisputably!
T'm not sure how many are actually Portuguese. Iago is from Spain, Alexi may be from Finland, all have worked in the A stream - Konitz, Monteliu, Lovano, Metheny to name but a few.
Together they gel and solowise they are totally ungelled! Plowing their individual furrows.
Lance.
