This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Delius, Davidson and the Drive-by Truckers: What is Southern about the Music of the US South?

Sounds a bit like an academic paper? Well, sort of. Brian Ward is Professor in American Studies at Northumbria University. His research interests include the modern US South, civil rights and Anglo-American cultural relations. A published author and contributor of scholarly articles to numerous publications including Just My Soul Responding: Rhythm and Blues, Black Consciousness and Race Relations, future books will examine workers’ lives in the early US recording industry and the relationship between the Beatles and the US South.       
Northumbria University’s current Public Lecture series concludes with Professor Ward asking the question – ‘What is Southern about the Music of the US South?’ on Monday 18 January at City Campus East. Having heard Ward lecture on similar topics this event comes highly recommended. Open to the public, free admission, with a six o’clock start the lecture will last one hour. City Campus East is the eye-catching building on the site of the old Manors Goods Yard just out of Newcastle city centre and directly across the road from Manors Metro Station. Head for Lecture Theatre 002 in the Business and Law Building.
