(Review by Russell)
Standing room only once again this week.
Singer-songwriter Shona Crossan opened the programme with two tunes. Sitting at
the keyboard, accompanied by double bassist Tim Farrow and drummer Dom Lodge, Cold Heart and Release were two of Crossan’s own compositions. A talented trio.
Pianist Jessica Bates sang an Andy Cutting number
with, as the performer noted, a Bill Evans’ feel to it. For a second number
Bates was joined by Mercedes Philips (sop sax).
Violinist Sarah Berry played two solo pieces. The
first comprised two movements from Leclair’s Sonata in D Major, the second, a work by Czech composer Misha
Alperin.
The Culture Lab session ended with tenor saxophonist
Joe Reeve (pictured) playing So What with guitar
and six-string bass accompaniment. A second, final selection, Jim Hall’s Careful rounded off an entertaining
three quarters of an hour.
Next Thursday (Nov 12) at 1:10pm there is a Culture
Lab special. Contemporary quartet Dans Les Abres fly in to Newcastle ahead of a
London Jazz Festival date. European free form and composed elements will dazzle
the student audience. Open to the public, this is a rare opportunity for those
into such adventures. Free admission.
