This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Better Than TV - Late

I'll hold my hand up high and confess that I'd never heard of Better Than TV until this disc slid through the letterbox of my modest 3 up 2 down -. probably because I haven't been in Cambridge recently. On the strength of this, their debut CD, maybe Cambridge would be a good place to hang out. I like the band name even though it could be equally applied to the Maria Schneider Orchestra or those two Romanian guys who busk around Newcastle.
Tom Green is a name well known to me on the strength of a Jazz Café gig with his septet earlier this year and an equally impressive album, Skyline, released around about the same time. Needless to say, his trombone is equally outstanding here - filling out the ensembles and hitting the front with gutsy solos.
Spence is no mug either, lyrical and fluent, the perfect foil for Green. Burgoyne, Blake and Contrino may not be Coronation St. material but they deserve casting in Frith St. Contrino claims responsibility for all compositions and he can feel justly proud. 
Modern jazz as we knew it, clothed in the jazz of today and, in a perfect world, the jazz of tomorrow!
A good start to the month!
