Sad to announce the death of Ornette Coleman today (June 11), aged 85, of a cardiac arrest at his Manhattan home.

PURE MUSIC STELLAR GOD, RIP
I had the great privilege of being at Ornette's first ever UK concert in August 1965, and the even greater privilege of meeting him many years later (when he signed my programme from that ever memorable event). I suppose it's in the nature of creative innovation that his music was widely condemned when he first came on the scene, yet today many of his tunes have become part of the jazz canon. The best tribute we can pay to his memory is to retain open ears and minds, and to recognise that improvised music has to constantly evolve if it is to live as a ceative art form: there will always be radicals and conservatives, but for the latter to deride the former does a disservice to the spirit of all the innovators who have made jazz such an ever surprising pleasure. Thank you Ornette for all the joy you have brought me over the years.
