Jazz North East presents: Capsule @ Bridge Hotel, Newcastle - May 17

Capsule are a product of the ‘Jazz Shuttle’ scheme which aims to bring musicians together from both sides of the channel. This trio couldn’t be more evenly split down the middle Bourne hails from Leeds, Godet from France and De Villiers nicely straddles the two countries being born and brought up in the UK but now living in Paris since moving there 10 years back.
It’s hard to label the band’s output maybe the closest one can get is to call it improvised chamber music. The three musicians feed off in each in a fairly minimalist kind of way in what in betting parlance would be described as a ‘patent’ (3 doubles, 3 singles and a treble) however in terms of knowing what they were about to play next all bets were off. At times the proceeding were gentle and intricate whilst at others they were loud and abrasive and just occasionally simply bizarre at one point Godet employed 2 old style cassette players and a transistor radio to improvise with. The hour long single set was always interesting and challenging and it appeared that all in the rather select audience thoroughly enjoyed their evening.
